When `H_(2)S` is passed through an acidified solution of an inorganic mixture ( which contains no group-II cation), yellowish turbidity appears. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The mixture must contain some nitrite or nitrate salt, which releases either nitrous or nitric acid in acidic medium. These acids oxidise `H_(2)S` to S, which causes yellowish turbidity.
`2HNO_(2)+H_(2)Sto2NO+2H_(2)O+S` (yellowish turbidity)
`2HNO_(3)+H_(2)Sto2NO_(2)+2H_(2)O+S` (yellowish turbidity)
