Explain why NI(3) acts as an explosive....

Explain why `NI_(3)` acts as an explosive.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`NI_(3)` comprises of one N -atom and three larger iodine atoms. These iodine atoms lie in closed proximity to each other and cluster around one side of the N -atom. Since they repel each other in small space, severe steric strain developes. This causes the molecule unstable. Hence `NI_(3)` acts as an explosive.
