How do the transition elements form `pi-` complexes ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to the presence of vacant d - orbitals in the transition elements, the ligands with localised or delocalised `pi-` electrons `(viz, CH_(2)=CH_(2), C_(2)H_(5)^(-), C_(6)H_(6), etc.)` form bonds with the metals by transferring their `pi`- elecrons to these vacant orbitals. Hence, transition elements form `pi-` complexes.
