Explain which of the following compounds...

Explain which of the following compounds has effective atomic number of central metal atom in accordance with Sidwick theory?
(1) `K_(3)[Fe(CN_(6))]` (2) `K_(4)[Fe(CN)_(6)]`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The Effective Atomic Number (EAN) of Fe in
`K_(3)[overset("III")(Fe)(CN)_(6)]=26-3+2xx6=35`
The Effective Atomic Number (EAN) of Fe in
`K_(4)[overset("II")(Fe)(CN)_(6)]=26-2+2xx6=36`
In the second compound, the EAN of Fe is 36, which is same as the atomic number of next nearest noble gas Krypton.
Hence, effective atomic number of Fe in `K_(4)[overset("II")(Fe)(CN)_(6)]` is in accordance with Sidgwick theory.
