[CuCl(4)]^(2-) exists but [CuI(4)]^(2-) ...

`[CuCl_(4)]^(2-)` exists but `[CuI_(4)]^(2-)` does not. Give reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`Cu^(2+)` when comes in contact with `I^(-)` ion, it oxidises `I^(-)` to `I_(2)`. Hence, `[CuI_(4)]^(2-)` does not exist.
`2Cu^(2+)+4I^(-)rarrCu_(2)I_(2)(s)+I_(2)`
[Note : `Cu^(2+)` cannot oxidise `Cl^(-)` to `Cl_(2)`]
