A coordination compound, CrCl(3).4H(2)O ...

A coordination compound, `CrCl_(3).4H_(2)O` gives a precipitate of `AgCl` with silver nitrate solution. From the value of molar conductivity, the aqueous solution of the compound was found to contain 2 moles of ions. Write the name and structural formula of the compound.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`CrCl_(3).4H_(2)O overset(AgNO_(3))rarr AgCl" (precipitate)"`
From the molar conductivity value of the compound, we see that the ionisation of each molecule results in the formation of only 2 ions. Hence, there is only `Cl^(-)` ion outside the coordination sphere. So the structural formula of the complex is `[Cr(H_(2)O)_(4)Cl_(4)]Cl`.
`[Cr(H_(2)O)_(4)Cl_(2)]ClhArr [Cr(H_(2)O)_(4)Cl_(2)]^(+)+Cl^(-)`
IUPAC name : tetraquadichloridochromium (III) chloride.
