Assertion (A) : `[Fe(CN)_(6)]^(3-)` ion shows magnetic moment corresponding to two unpaired electrons.
Reason (R) : Because it has `d^(2)sp^(3)` type hybridisation.

A

Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)

B

Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)

C

(A) is true but (R) is false

D

(A) is false but (R) is true

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Correct reason : In presence of strong ligand `(CN^(-)), Fe^(3+)` has the elec. Confg. `(3d^(5)=3d^(2)3d^(2)3d^(1)3d^(1)3d^(0)3d^(0)).`
Thus `Fe^(3+)` is `d^(2)s^(3)` hybridised and the complex shows magnetic moment corresponding to one unpaired moment corresponding to one unpaired electrons.
