Why is CO a stronger complexing agent than `NH_(3)`?

`CO` can form both` sigma` and `pi` bonds with metal atoms are hence, such complexes are highly stable due to greater CFSE value. But `NH_(3)` can form only `sigma`-bonds with metal atoms leading to much less stable complexes,
