Identify the isomeric alkanes (molecular formula = `C_(5)H_(12)`)which produce
(iii) four isomeric monochlorides on photochemical chlorination.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The alkane which produces 4 monochlorides must have four types of non-equivalent hydrogens. And hence, the alkane is 2-methylbutane `(Coverset(a)H_(3))_(3)Coverset(b)H_(2)Coverset(c)H_(2)Coverset(d)H_(3)`. Substitution of H-atoms lebeled a,b,c, and d lead to the formation of 4 monochlorides.
