Is it possible to convert ethanol into ethyl iodide by heating it with Nal and conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It is not possible to convert ethonol into ethyl iodide by heating it with NaI and conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)`. This is because in presence of `H_(2)SO_(4), I^(Theta)` (obtained from NaI) easily gets oxidised to form `I_(2)`.
`8NaI+9H_(2)SO_(4) to 4I_(2)+H_(2)S+8NaHSO_(4)+4H_(2)O`.
