Explain why KI is added to the reaction ...

Explain why KI is added to the reaction mixture to carry out the following reaction readily:
`CH_(3)-Cl_H_(2)O to CH_(3)-OH+HCl`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`I^(Theta)` is a very good nuclephilie as well as a very good leaving group. In the reaction medium, addition of KI gives `I^(Theta)` ion which readily substitues -Cl group to form iodomethane. -I group of iodomethane gets further substituted by `H_(2)O` molecule to form methanol.
