Explain why `CH_(3)OCH_(2)Cl` undergoes `S_(N)1` reaction, even though it is a primary halide?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Though `CH_(3)OCH_(2)Cl` is a primary halide, it undergoes `S_(N)1` reaction. This is because, the carbocation formed by the cleavage of C-Cl bond is resonance stabilised by the lone pair of oxygen atom.
