Which reacition will take place at a faster rate and why?
`SCN^(Theta)+CH_(3)CH_(2)Broverset(EtOH//H_(2)O)(rarr)CH_(3)CH_(2)SCN+Br^(Theta)`
`SCN^(Theta)+CH_(3)CH_(2)Broverset(EtOH//H_(2)O)(rarr)CH_(3)CH_(2)NCS+Br^(Theta)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`SCN^(Theta)` is an ambident nucleophile which has two donor sites (S and N). 'S' is more polarisable and less electronegative than 'N', thus, 'S' centre serves as better nucleophile than 'N' centre. Hence, the first reaction will take place at faster rate.
