Which of the compounds will react faster...

Which of the compounds will react faster in `S_(N)1` reaction with the `OH^(-)` ion? `CH_(3)-CH_(2)-Cl` or `C_(6)H_(5)-CH_(2)-Cl`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the rate determining step of `S_(N)1` reaction a carbocation intermediate is formed. Since `C_(6)H_(5)overset(o+)(C)H_(2)` is more stable than `CH_(3)overset(o+)(C)H_(2)` , therefore, `C_(6)H_(5)CH_(2)Cl` will react faster than `CH_(3)CH_(2)Cl` in `S_(N)1` pathway.
