Write the structures and name of the compounds formed when compound 'A' with molecular formula, `C_(7)H_(8)` is treated with `Cl_(2)` in the presence of `FeCl_(3)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

From the high C:H ratio of compound `A(ME:C_(7)H_(8))` , it appaears that it is an aromatic compound and it must be toluene `(C_(6)H_(5)CH_(3))`. Since -`CH_(3)` group is ortho`//`para- directing , therefore, compound 'A' undergoes electrophilic substitution on reaction with `Cl_(2)` in presence of `FeCl_(3)` to form a mixture of o- and p- chlorotoluenes.
