Cyanide ion acts as an ambident nucleoph...

Cyanide ion acts as an ambident nucleophilie. From which end it acts as a stronger nucleophile in aqueous medium? Give reason for your answer.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In cyanide ion `(M:overset(Theta)(C)-=N: )`, the carbon atom (with greater size and smaller electronegativity) has more polarisable electron cloud. So it is the C-atom rather than the N-atom of this ambident nuclephile which is involved in nucleophilic attack. The greater strength of C-C bond over C-N bond also favours such attack.
