Why is magnetic moment of ferric compoun...

Why is magnetic moment of ferric compounds more than ferrous compounds ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The `Fe^(2+)` ion has 4 unpaired electrons in 3d-orbital . On the other hand, `Fe^(3+)` ion has 5 unpaired electrons in 3d-orbital . As the magnetic moment of an ion is directly proportional to the number of unpaired electrons, the magnetic moment of ferric compounds is more than ferrous compounds .
