Why does type of overlap given in the following figure not result in bnd formation ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the first case, the ares under + + ovelap is equal to the area under +- pverlap. The two cancel out and the net overlap is zero, Bond formation does not take place. In the second case, no overlap is possible in `p_(x)and p_(y)` orbitals. Therefore, no bond is formed.
