In both water and dimethyl ether (CH(3)...

In both water and dimethyl ether `(CH_(3)-underset(* *)overset(* *)O-CH_(3)),` oxygen atom is central atom, and has the same hybridisation, yet they have different bond angles. Which one has greater bond angle ? Give reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The difference in the bond angles is ecause of bigger size of `CH_(2)` groups as compared to hydrogen atoms resulting in greater force of repulsion. As a result, the bond angle in dimethyl ether is almost tetrahedral while in water, it is comparatively less.
