Explain why `CO_(3)^(2-)` ion cannot be represented by a single Lewis structure. How can it be best represented ?

In carbonate `(CO_(3)^(2-))` ion. All the three C to O bond lengths are same. This cannot be shown by a single Lewis structure.The ion is a hybrid of three contributing structures.
