A sample of gas is found to occupy a volume of `900 cm^(3)` at `27^(@)C`. Calculate the temperature at which it will occupy a volume of `300 cm^(3)`, provided the pressure is kept constant.

The correct Answer is:
`-173^(@)C`

`V_(1) = 900 cm^(2) , V_(2) = 300 cm^(3)`
`T_(1) = 27 + 273 = 300 K , T_(2) = ?`
Since pressure of the gas is constant, Charles' Law is applicable.
`(V_(1))/(T_(1))= (V_(2))/(T_(21))` or `T_(2) = (V_(2) xx T_(1))/(V_(1)) = ((300 cm^(3)) xx (300 K))/((900 cm^(3))) = 100 K = (100 - 273) = - 173^(@)C`.
