Lassaigne's extract is prepared in distilled water and not in tap water. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Tap water generally contains in it chloride ions `(Cl^(-))`. Therefore, it cannot be used to test the presence of chlorine in an organic compound. Keeping this in view, the Lassaigne's extract is normally prepared in distilled water.
