Out of o-nitrophenol and o-cresol which is more acidic ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Methyl `(-CH_(3))` group is an electron releasing group whereas nitro `(-NO_(2))` group is electron withdrawing in nature.
Obviously , the acidic strength of p-nitrophenol `(P_(Ka)=7.2)` is more than of o-nitrophenol `(P_(Ka)=10.14)` Plese
Please note that lesser the `P_(Ka)` value , more is acidic strength . For more details ,consult section 16
