In which of the following pairs, there is greatest difference in the oxidation number of the underlined elements ?

A

`underline(N)O_(2)` and `underline(N)_(2)O_(4)`

B

`underline(P)_(2)O_(5)` and `underline(P)_(4)O_(10)`

C

`underline(N)_(2)O` and `underline(N)O`

D

`underline(S)O_(2)` and `underline(S)O_(3)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

O.N. of N is `NO_(2)` and `N_(2)O_(5)` is +4 , difference is zero. O.N. of P in `P_(2)O_(5)` and `P_(4)O_(10)` is +5 , difference is zero. O.N. of N in `N_(2)O` and NO are +1 and +2 , difference is +1 . O.N. Of S in `SO_(2)` is +4 and in `SO_(3)` it is +6, thus difference is +2.
