A rocket explodes in mid air. What happens to its total momentum and total KE?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Since no external impulsive force acts on the rocket, its total momentum remains unchanged. When the rocket explodes, its fragments receive additional kinetic energy from the explosion (the chemical energy of the fuel changes into kinetic energy). Obviously, the total kinetic energy increases.
