In a surface tension experiment with a capillary tube water rises upto `0.1 m`. If the same experiment is repeated in an artificial satellite, which is revolving around the earth , water will rise in the capillary tube upto a height of :

A

0.1 m

B

0.2 m

C

0.98 m

D

full length of the capillary tube

The correct Answer is:
D

In a capillary tube water rises to a height h such that the hydrostatic pressure `(hrhog)` becomes equal to the excess pressure `p=2sigma//R`, where R is the radius of curvature of the meniscus. A satellite in a stable orbit around the earth is in a state of weightlessness, i.e. `g=0`. Thus the hydrostatic pressure becomes zero. Consequently, water will rise to the top to the tube.
