Carbohydrates are classified on the basis of their bahaviour on hydrolysis and also as reducing or non-reducing sugar. Sucrose is a ............ .

A

monosaccharide

B

disaccharide

C

reducing sugar

D

non-reducing sugar

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B, D

Sucrose on hydrolysis produces equimolar mixture of `alpha - D(+)` glucose and `B-D(-)-` fructose. Since in sucrose `C-1` of glucose and `C-2` of fructose are linked with each other. So, they are non-reducing in nature.
