For a given reaction of first order, it takes `20` minutes for the concentration to drop from `1.0 "mol liter"^(-1)` to `0.6 "mol litre"^(-1)`. The time required for the concentration to drop from `0.6 "mol litre"^(-1)` to `0.36 "mol litre"^(-1)` will be

A

more than 20 minutes

B

less than 20 minutes

C

equal to 20 minutes

D

infinity

The correct Answer is:
C

`1M rarr 0.6 M rarr 0.36`
`(1-0.6)/(1)xx100=40%, (0.6-0.36)/(0.6)xx100=40%`
Since half life or life of a particular fraction for first order reaction is independent of initial concentration so all successive fractional lives are also same.
The time required to complete 40% reaction is 20 min, and `0.6 rarr 0.36` is also 40% of reaction so in both cases time taken will be equal i.e., 20 min.
