Electron affinity of chlorine is more than that of fluorine - explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The size of fluorine atom is small. The addition of electron to small fluorine atom results in electron-electron repulsions. To overcome these repulsions some of the energy liberated due to addition of electron gain enthalpy decreases. These electron - electron repulsions are absent in bigger chlorine atom. So the electron gain enthalpy of fluorine is less than chlorine.
