Would you expect IE(1) for two isotopes ...

Would you expect `IE_(1)` for two isotopes of the same element to be the same or different? Justify.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Isotopes of the same element have same I.E. value. Though the isotopes of an element have different atomic weights they have same atomic number. Since the nuclei of isotopes of same element contain same number of protons their nuclear charge is same. Also their atomic sizes are same. So the nuclear attraction on the electrons in different isotopes of same element is same. Hence the `IE_(1)` of the isotopes of the same element are same.
