Is there any change in the hybridization of Boron and Nitrogen atoms as a result of the following reaction ?
`BF_(3)+NH_(3) rarr F_(3)BNH_(3)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Formation of Ammonia - Boron trifluoride : In `NH_(3)` molecule, the central 'N' atom contains a lone pair of electrons in one of its `sp^(3)` hybrid orbitals. Before reaction with `NH_(3)`, the central boron atom of `BF_(3)` will be in its `sp^(2)` hybridised state while reacting with `NH_(3)`, in order to accept the lone pair of electrons from N atom of `NH_(3)`, the central 'B' atom of `BF_(3)` changes its hybiridisation from `sp^(2) " to " sp^(3)`. But, there will be no change in the hybridised state of N atom of `NH_(3)`.
