Given two methods of preparation of acetylene. How does it react with water and Ozone?

Text Solution

Methods of prepartion of Acetylen:
1. Dehydrohalogenation: Dibromoethane on heating with alcoholic KOH undergoes dehydrohalogenation and gives acetylene.

From iodoform: Iodoform on heating with silver powder gives acetylene.
`CH_(3)+6Ag+underset("Iodoform")(CHI_(3))to underset("Acetylene")(HC-=CH+6AgI)`
Properties of Acetylene:
1. Action with water: When acetylene gas is passed through di. `H_(2)SO_(4)` below `60^(@)` in presence of `HgSO_(4)`. it undergoes addition with water forming acetaldehyde.
`underset("Acetylene Water")(HC-=CH+H.OH) underset(30% H_(2)SO_(4))overset(1% H_(2)SO_(4))to underset("Vinyl alcohol")([CH_(2)=CH.OH]) to underset("Acetaldehyde")(CH_(3).CHO)`
2. Action with ozone: Acetylene reacts with ozone and undergoes addition to form acetylene ozonide. This on hydrolysis in presence of Zn gives gloxal.
