Nostoc and Anabaena have specialised cells called hetercysts. What is the function of these cells?

Heterocyst are thick walled structures. They contain an enzyme called nitrogenase which catalyse nitrogen fixation i.e. reduction of atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia.
