Vascular bundles are radial, that is, xylem and phloem which occur in separate patches, are arranged on alternate radii. Xylem consists of both pro to and metaxylem. It is exarch since the protoxylem lies towards the epidermis. The number of xylem bundles and also the phloem in dicot roots may be two to six, i.e. diarch to hexarch (exceptionally it may be triarch as in roots of pea).
