Give a chemical test and the reagents used to distinguish between the following :
'Ethylamine and diethylamine'

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Test with benzene sulphonyl chloride `(C_(6)H_(5)SO_(2)Cl)`. Ethylamine (primary amine) forms N-ethyl benzene sulphonamide which because of the presence of an acidic hydrogen on the N-atom dissolves in KOH. On the other hand, diethyl amine (secondary amine) forms N, N-diethyl benzene sulphonamide which due to the absence of acidic hydrogen on N-atom does not dissolve in KOH.
