The moon is at the same distance from the sun as the earth is but there is very cold and hot temperature variations, e.g. from `-190^(@)C` to `110^(@)C`. The main reason behind this huge variation in temperature of moon is that it has no atmosphere. The atmosphere plays very important role in the temperature control. Air is a bad conductor of temphaturs thus, it acts as temperature buffer and checks excessive rise of temperature during the day and excessive cooling during the night.

The resistance of a thin metallic cylinder changes from 4.25 Omega "to" 4.75 Omega when its temperture is incrased from 10^@C "to 110^@C . Calculate the resistance of the same object when it is kept at temperature 0^@C . Also calculate the temperature coefficient of resistance.

Newton’s law of cooling says that the rate of cooling of a body is proportional to the temperature difference between the body and its surrounding when the difference in temperature is small. (a) Will it be reasonable to assume that the rate of heating of a body is proportional to temperature difference between the surrounding and the body (for small difference in temperature) when the body is placed in a surrounding having higher temperature than the body? (b) Assuming that our assumption made in (a) is correct estimate the time required for a cup of cold coffee to gain temperature from 10^(@)C to 15^(@)C when it is kept in a room having temperature 25^(@)C . It was observed that the temperature of the cup increases from 5^(@)C to 10^(@)C in 4 min

The sun is less bright at morning and evening as compared to at noon although its distance from the observer is almost the same. Why ?

The sun having surface temperature Ts radiates like a black body. The rasius of sun is Rs and earth is at a distance R from the surface of sun. Earth absorbs radiations falling on its surface from sun only and is at constant temperature T. If radiations falling on earth's surface are alomost parallel and earth also radiates like a blackbody, then
