In photosyntheses, 6 molecules of carbon...

In photosyntheses, 6 molecules of carbon combine with an equal number of water molecules through a complex series of reactions to give a molecule of glucose having a molecular formula `C_(6)H_(12)O_(6)`. How many grams of water would be requried to produce 18g of glucose? Compute the volume of water so consumed assuming the density of water to be `1g cm^(-3)`.

During photosyntheses, following reaction takes place.
`6CO_(2) + 6H_(2)O to C_(6)H_(12)O_(6) + 6O_(2)`
`6(2xx1+16)`
`=6 xx 18=108g`
molecular formulae of glucose `(C_(6)H_(12)O_(6)) = 6 xx 12 + 12 xx 1+6 xx 16`
`=72 + 12 + 96 = 180g`
`therefore` 18g of glucose will require the amount of water `=(108g xx 18g)/(180g) = 10.8g`
As the amount of water consumed (m) = 10.8g
Given, that density (d) of water `=1g cm^(-3)`
`therefore` Volume(V) of water consumed =`m/d [As d=m/V]= (10.8g)/(1g cm^(-3)) = 10.8 cm^(3)`
