Explain the refraction of light through ...

Explain the refraction of light through a triangular glass prism using a labelled ray diagram. Hence define the angle of diviation.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The refraction of light through a triangular glass prism is shown below

A ray of light PE is entering from air to glass at the first surface AB. The light ray EF on refraction has bent towards the normal. At the second surface AC, the light ray FS has entered from glass to air and bent away from normal.
The angle made by extending incident ray with the emergent ray is called angle of deviation.

Explain the phenomenon of dispersion of white light through a glass prism, using suitable ray diagram.

Define refractive index of a transparent medium. A ray of light passes through a triangular prism. Plot a graph showing the variation of the angle of deviation with the angle of incidence.

Define refractive index of a transparent medium. A ray of light passes through a triangular prism. Plot a graph showing the variation of angle of deviation with the angle of incidence. Hence derive prism formula.

(a) Draw a ray diagram showing the passage of light through a glass prism. Hence obtain a relation between the angles of deviation, incidence and emergence and angle of prism. (b) Show that no ray can pass through a prism whose refracting angle A is greater than twice the critical angle for the material of the prism.

What is meant by the 'angle of incidence' and the 'angle of refraction' for a ray of light? Draw a labelled ray diagram to show the angle of incidence and the angle of refraction for a refracted ray of light.

Complete the following ray diagram to show refraction of light through a glass slab and label the incident ray, refracted ray and emergent ray.
