How does the metallic and non-metalic character vary on moving from left to right in a period?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

As we move from left to right in a period, the number of valence electrons increases by one at each succeeding element but the number of shells remains same. Due to this effective nuclear charge increase. More is the effective nuclear charge, more is the attraction between nuclei and electron.
Hence, the tendency of the element to lose electrons decreases, this result in decrease in metallic character. Furthermore, the tendency of an element to gain electrons increases with increases in effective nuclear charge, so non-metallic character increases on moving from left to right in a period.

Atomic number is considered to be a more appropriate parameter than atomic mass for classification of elements in a periodic table. Why? How does metallic character of elements vary on moving from (i) left to right in a period? (ii) from top to bottom in a group? Give reasons for your answers.

Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). Assertion (A) : Metallic character decreases and non-metallic character increases on moving from left to right in a period. Reason (R) : It is due to increase in ionisation enthalpy and decrease in electron gain enthalpy, when one moves from left to right in a period. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
