Which of the compounds will react faster in `S_(N)1` reaction with `""^(-)OH` ion?
`CH_(3)-CH_(2)-ClorC_(6)H_(5)-CH_(2)-Cl`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`S_(N)1` mechanism depends upon the stability of carbocation that is formed as intermediate in the mechanism.
`CH_(6)-CH_(2)-Cl` will form `C_(6)H_(5)""^(+)CH_(2)` carbocation as intermediate.
This carbocation is resonance stabilised and will resct faster in `S_(N)1` reaction.

While carbocation formed in `CH_(3)CH_(2)Cl` is `CH_(3)overset(+)CH_(2)`, not give `S_(N)1` reaction with `""^(-)OH` lon.
