Prove that sqrt(sec^(2)theta + cosec^(2)...

Prove that `sqrt(sec^(2)theta + cosec^(2)theta) = tantheta + cottheta`.

Text Solution

LSH `=sqrt(sec^(2)theta+cosec^(2)theta)`
`=sqrt(1/(cos^(2)theta) + 1/(sin^(2)theta))` `[therefore sectheta=1/(costheta` and `cosectheta=1/(sintheta)]`
`=sqrt(sin^(2)theta+cos^(2)theta)/(sin^(2)theta.cos^(2)theta) = sqrt(1/(sin^(2)theta.cos^(2)theta))` `[therefore sin^(2)theta+cos^(2)theta=1]`
`=1/(sintheta.costheta)= (sin^(2)theta+cos^(2)theta)/(sintheta.costheta)` `[therefore 1=sin^(2)theta+ cos^(2)theta]`
`=(sin^(2)theta)/(sintheta.costheta) + (cos^(2)theta)/(sintheta.costheta)`
`=(sintheta)/(costheta) + (costheta)/(sintheta)` `[therefore tantheta=(sintheta)/(costheta)` and `cottheta = (costheta)/(sintheta)]`
`=tantheta+ cottheta= RHS`
