A force of 100 N gives a mass m1, an acceleration of `10"ms"^(-2) "and of 20ms"^(-2)` to a mass `m^2.` What acceleration must be given to it if both the masses are tied together ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Suppose, a= acceleration produced if `m_1 and m_2` are tied together,
F= 100 N
Let `a_1 and a_2` be the acceleration produced in `m_1 and m_2,` respectively.
`a_(1)=10ms^(-2), a_(2)=20ms^(-2)("given")`
Again `m_(1)=F/a_(1) and m_(2)=F/a_(2)`
`rArr m_(1)=(100)/(10)=10ms^(-2)`
`and m_(2)=(100)/(20)=5 ms^(-2)`
`therefore m_(1)+m_(2)=10+5=15`
So, `a=(F)/(m_(1)+m_(2))=(100)/(15)=(20)/(3)`
`=6.67 ms^(-2)`
