In the manufacture of hydroxide , hydrogen gas and chlorine gas(X) are formed as by product. Chlorine gs reacts with lime water to give bleaching powder, a bleaching agent . Thus X is chloirne gas `(Cl_(2) gas)`
Y is calcium oxychloide or bleching powder `(CaOCl_(2))`
The equation for the preparation of sodium hydroixde is
`2NaCl(aq)+2H_(2)O(l)rarr2NaOH(aq)+Cl_(2)(g)+H_(2)(g)`
`Cl_(2)+Ca(OH)_(2)rarrCaOCl_(2)+H_(2)O`
