Why are lead compounds are added to petrol? How is it harmful?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lead compounds are added to petrol to reduce knocking i.e. rapid combution. Burning of this petrol leads to formation of lead halides (bromides and chloride) which are emitted into air with exhaust. Lead inhalation causes anaemia and brain damage, lead poisoning which disturbs the nervous system, liver and kidney.
