What is the role of the acid in our stomach?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The role of acid in the stomach is make the medium of gastric juice acidic so that the enzyme pepsin can break down proteins of the food effectively. This is because the enzyme pepsin can digest proteins effectively only in the acidic medium. Another role of acid is that it kills any bacteria which may enter the stomach with our food.
