The number of protons, neutrons and elec...

The number of protons, neutrons and electrons in species A to E are given in the following table :

Indicate from the above table the species that represent a pair of isotopes.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Those species which contain the same number of protons but different number of neutrons will be a pair of isotopes. In the above table only two species C and E have the same number of protons (17 each) but different number of neutrons (20 and 18 respectively). Thus, C and E are a pair of isotopes. (Please note that the atomic number 17 is of chlorine, so C and E are actually the two actually the two isotopes of chlorine).

Which of the following is represented by the largest number of species ?

The numbers of electrons, protons, and neutrons in a species are equal to 18,16 , and 16 , respectively. Write the symol for the species in the standard format. Strategy: Before usding the standard notation _(Z)^(A)X , find out wheter the species is a neutral atom, a cation, or an anion. if it is a neutral atom, Eq is valid, i.e. Number of protons = Number of electrons = Atomic number If the species is an ion, determine whether the number of protons is larger (cation, a positive ion) or smaller (anion, a negative ion) than the number of electrons. Number of neurtons is always given by Eq. i.e., N=A-Z , whether the species is neutral or charged.
