(i) `2Na(s)+O_(2)(g)rarr2NaO(s)`
(ii) `CuO(g) +H_(2)(g) rarr Cu(s) +H_(2)O(l)`

(i) Here sodium (Na) is changing into sodium oxide `(Na_(2)O).` This is the addition of oxygen to sodium. Now, addition of oxygen is called oxidation. So the substance oxidised is sodium (Na).
(ii) In this reaction, oxygen `(O_(2))` is changing into sodium oxide. `(Na_(2)O).` This is the addition of a metal (sodium, Na) to oxygen. Now, by definition, the addition of metal is called reduction. So, the substance reduced is oxygen `(O_(2)).`
