A piece of black electrode used in dry cell on strong heating in air gave a colorless gas which tuned lime eater milky. What was the material of the electrode?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We know that graphite is used for making the electrodes . So the piece if black electrode used in the dry cell is made of graphite .(which is an allotrope of carbon element). This is confiremd by the fact that the piece of electrode on strong heating in iar gave a colouless gas carbon dioxide which turned lime water milky . Thus , the material of the electrode is graphite.

A colourless gas is produced on heating strongly a piece of black clectrode used in dry cell. This gas turns lime water milky, of what material is the electrode made?

When 16.8 g of a white solid X was heated 4.4 g of an acid gas A which turned lime waer milky, was driven off together with 1.8 g of a gas B which condensed to a colourless liquid. The solid that remained Y dissolved in water to give an alkaline solution which with excess barium chloride solution gave a white precipitate Z. The precipitate effervesced with acid giving carbon dioxide. Identifu A,B and Y and write the quation for the thermal decomposition of X.

A four carbon atoms containing neutral oranic compoud X reacts with sodium metal to evolve a gas which burns with a 'pop' sound . Another foiur carbon atoms containing carbon compoound reacts with sodium hydrogencrbvonate to evolvbe a gas which truns lime water milky when compounds X and Y are heated together in the presence of al little of concentrated suphuric acid then a new compound Z is formed.
