Why did we study two leaves in this (Carbondioxide is necessary for photosynthesis) experiment?

The leaf which is exposed to the atmospheric air becomes bluish black. It proves starch is prepared in the leaf by using `CO_2` from atmosphere.
The leaf inside the flask containing potassium hydroxide, which absorbs `CO_2` present in the bottle does not become bluish black showing that carbon dioxide is necessary for photosynthesis.
