In the foetal heart, foramen ovale is an opening in the inter-atrial septum which is closed in adult and represented by an oval depression called foss ovalis.
In the embryonic period, a blood vessel called suctus arteriosus shunts blood from the pulmonary aorta into systemic aorta.
But after birth, ductus arteriosus closes, leaving a remnant called ligamentum arteriosum. The artium and the ventricle of the same side are also separated by a thick fibrous tissue called the atrio-ventricular ceptum.
